Since I can't make it to the meeting, here are my thoughts on Hedgehog. I'm glad I pushed myself to read the entire book, because I liked it way better at the end than at the start. I really hated the first half of the book. Superficial, unbelievable and worse, completely unlikeable characters who just served as fronts for the author's pretentious thoughts on art, philosophy, pop culture, whatever...it was all so boring. I think (hope) something was seriously lost in translation here. And the one-dimensional, stereotypical view of Japanese culture was killing me. At least it was positive, while the rest of the book was so negative.
Anyway, then I really liked the passage about the school choir, and the story took an upward swing from there. It was still unrealistic and all, but it became more enjoyable, especially the ending. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, but will miss being part of the discussion.
